About Irene Stacy Center
In the early 1950's, interest in local mental health problems resulted in the establishment of the Mental Health Committee of the Butler County Health and Welfare Council. This Committee, which was set up to study the needs of the County, later developed into the Mental Health Association, a volunteer group of interested citizens which still exists as an advocacy and educational organization.
An extensive survey by the Mental Health Association showed the need for treatment facilities in the County and laid the groundwork for the incorporation of the Mental Health Guidance Clinic in August 22, 1958. In March of the following year, the Clinic started offering its services to the public.
In 1966, the Mental Health/Mental Retardation Act enacted by the State Legislature, mandated the coordination, evaluation, and plan for development for all county services in this field under the direction of the County Board. The Board of Mental Health/Mental Retardation was appointed by the County Commissioners in June 1969, and in July, the Mental Health Guidance Clinic of Butler County became a part of this comprehensive mental health care unit charged with serving the basic needs of the people of Butler County.
